Getting around Barbados is one of the most accessible and culturally vibrant experiences in the Caribbean. Whether you are commuting between the luxury shopping enclaves of Holetown, traveling from the Bridgetown Cruise Port, or journeying cross-island from Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), the island’s comprehensive transit ecosystem offers solutions for every budget.
Every public conveyance in Barbados—from national electric Transport Board buses to privately operated yellow minibuses and white ZR vans—charges a standardized flat rate of BDS $3.50 (USD $1.75) per journey, regardless of distance traveled.
Blue Transport Board Buses
Spacious, air-conditioned government coaches. Route 1 Speightstown and Route 1C run north from Bridgetown’s Princess Alice Terminal along Highway 1. Requires exact local cash (BDS $3.50); no change given.

Energetic, privately owned buses renowned for island music. Highly frequent departures along the West Coast. Conductors provide cash change and accept US currency at the standard 2:1 exchange rate.
Read Bus Etiquette Guidelines →White ZR Route 1 Vans
The fastest public transit on Highway 1. White minivans marked with a maroon stripe pass every 3 to 7 minutes. Simply signal the driver with a downward wrist gesture at any official bus stop.

Government-regulated rates (e.g., BDS $62 from Bridgetown Port to Holetown). Digital ride-hailing via Uber Taxi and PickUP Barbados is also active across the West Coast corridor.

If you prefer self-driving, note that vehicles travel on the left-hand side of the road. Crucially, as of October 15, 2025, the Government of Barbados abolished the historical Visitor Driving Permit. You no longer need to purchase a physical driving permit. In its place, a statutory Car Rental Levy of BDS $5.00 per day (capped at BDS $35.00 maximum per rental contract) is automatically included in your rental agreement by licensed hire agencies.
